Royal Australian Air Force – Centenary Memorial Dedication Ceremony
RAAF Base Point Cook , Victoria
About Project
Period: March 2022
Client: Royal Australian Air Force
Subject: Centenary Memorial Dedication
More than 350,000 Australian have served in the RAAF over the last 100 years. To honour the sacrifices and duty, a memorial was constructed on the parade ground at RAAF Base Point Cook in Melbourne, Victoria to mark the 100 years. This event dedicated the new memorial.
Our Task Was
To execute a hybrid event. The first component was to stage the event to the live audience at the parade ground. In addition, the camera capture was live-streamed and recorded for the RAAF channel for later viewing. NEXTGEN developed and presented an outdoor floor plan that would allow a beautiful and respectful live event experience with the creative use of multiple cameras.
The Process
After viewing a drawing of the memorial construction, a site visit was implemented to develop a production floor-plan taking into account many factors: COVID seating arrangement, camera angles, Air Force band riser, positioning of 2 lecterns, multiple flypasts, arrivals of VIP’s, positioning of power generators, audio design to cater for windy and inclement weather conditions.
The MC script enabled the creation of an event run sheet that listed the order of proceedings. Military events have a traditional set form that is well understood by the attendees that flows from top to bottom. Our team had to become conversant quickly with the event proceedings.
We collaborated with RAAF team on branding and style to ensure our slides, graphics and lower third on-screen elements complemented the current centenary style as well as ensuring protocols were maintained.
An un-obtrusive audio design was required to ensure the sweeping memorial was unobscured to the audience whilst ensuring the PA speakers were not seen on camera.
The 9-camera shoot involved a camera director with 6 manned and 3 fixed cameras that were then fed into the vMix system, mixed with supers, video clips, and then sent to record and a live stream.
There were additional events over the two days requiring the services of Nextgen. A chapel service on the morning of the event and a luncheon for attendees after the memorial in the mess hall. The mess hall also hosted an awards dinner the evening before.
The Result
The events over the two days were attended in numbers with guests warmly welcomed, participating in the dedication of the new Air Force memorial.
The centenary celebrations for the RAAF had begun in on 31 March 2021 and this memorial dedication was the last event on the centenary calendar on 30 March 2022.
The flypasts of CA-18 Mustangs and The Roulettes aerial display were the highlight for the RAAF audience.
The new Air Force Centenary Memorial is a special place to pause and reflect on what Air Force personnel have contributed to Australia since 1921, in times of conflict and in peace.
